All those great things you've heard about hunting in Montana are true. Big Sky Country is fabulous hunting country and that includes the Missouri Breaks of the Fort Peck area.
Clint Thomas and a Missouri Breaks bull elk.
The timbered ridges near the lake are home to some huge elk and some big mule deer bucks. You'll find some white-tailed deer in Garfield County as well, along with some excellent hunting for pronghorn antelope.
One of the unique ways that hunters go looking for elk and mule deer in the Breaks is by boat, launching from Hell Creek and then using binoculars and spotting scopes to pinpoint animals on the ridges leading down to the lake. At times, they'll set up base camps on the lake shore or they stay in the Hell Creek Marina's rooms and head out onto the lake early in the morning.
If you have any questions about hunting the Missouri Breaks for deer and elk or want to go to the open prairies near the lake for pronghorn antelope, we urge you to contact us. We'll be happy to share what we know and, if you want them, we can recommend area outfitters and guides who provide good service to their clients.
For Montana hunting license information, you can go to license info on the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Web site. To check out Montana's season dates, go to hunting seasons on the FWP site.
Fall is a fabulous time to be in Montana. The hunting is great, and the fishing is pretty darn good, too.
